Dental implants are a long-lasting option for replacing missing teeth or teeth that cannot be predictably restored. Whether you are missing one tooth, several teeth, or are considering a more comprehensive implant-supported treatment, we will evaluate your individual situation and discuss the options available to you.
If you are an existing patient of Pacific Coast Dental, we can assess your implant options as part of your ongoing dental care.
New patients will first require a comprehensive new patient examination. This allows us to evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, medical and dental history, and overall oral health before recommending implant treatment.
Implant planning typically includes appropriate dental X-rays and, when indicated, a 3D CBCT scan. Three-dimensional imaging allows us to evaluate the available bone and important anatomical structures and to plan the position of the implant accurately.
The timing of implant placement depends on the condition of the tooth, surrounding bone and gums, and the individual patient’s situation.
In selected cases, an implant can be placed at the same appointment as the tooth extraction. The damaged or non-restorable tooth is carefully removed and, when the bone and surrounding tissues are suitable, the dental implant is placed immediately into the extraction site.
Immediate implant placement can reduce the number of surgical appointments and shorten the overall treatment process. However, it is not appropriate for every patient or every extraction site.
If immediate implant placement is not advisable, the extraction site is allowed to heal before implant placement. The appropriate healing period varies depending on the condition of the socket, infection, bone availability, and whether bone grafting is required.
After healing, the site is reassessed and the implant is placed when conditions are appropriate.
If your tooth was extracted months or years ago, we can evaluate the area to determine whether there is enough bone for an implant.
A clinical examination and appropriate imaging, which may include a 3D CBCT scan, help us assess the height and width of the available bone. Some patients have adequate bone for straightforward implant placement, while others may benefit from bone grafting before or during implant surgery.
Once treatment planning is complete, the implant is surgically positioned in the jawbone. Local anesthetic is used for the procedure, and sedation options may also be available when appropriate.
The implant is then given time to integrate with the surrounding bone before the final restoration is completed. Healing time varies depending on the implant site, bone quality, surgical procedure, and individual healing.
Once the implant has healed and is stable, a custom implant crown can be made to replace the missing tooth. The goal is to restore comfortable function while creating a tooth that looks and feels natural.
Implants require ongoing care just like natural teeth. Good home care, regular dental examinations, and professional hygiene visits are important for maintaining the health of the implant and surrounding tissues.
